NIE Applications in Spain
The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a personal identification number assigned to foreign nationals in Spain. You may need one when buying property, opening a bank account, paying taxes or carrying out other official or financial transactions.
Your NIE is a number, not a residence permit. Having one does not automatically give you the right to live or work in Spain.
Who can apply for an NIE?
Foreign nationals who need to deal with Spanish legal, financial or administrative matters can apply for an NIE. You do not necessarily need to live in Spain to obtain one.
How to apply for your NIE

Applications made in Spain are generally handled through the National Police. Check the official appointment booking website and select the relevant NIE procedure for your province.

Can you apply from abroad?
In many cases, you can apply through a Spanish consulate in your country of residence. The consulate will explain its appointment procedure and document requirements.
You may also be able to appoint a representative in Spain, subject to the applicable requirements.
NIE or TIE: What is the difference?
NIE: Your personal foreigner identification number.
TIE: The physical identity card issued to eligible foreign nationals as evidence of their residence status.
You may have an NIE without having a TIE or Spanish residence permission.
