E-Scooter Registration in Spain
Electric scooters (patinetes eléctricos) that meet Spain’s definition of a Personal Mobility Vehicle (Vehículo de Movilidad Personal, or VMP) must be registered with the Spanish traffic authority, the DGT. Registration is also required before obtaining the compulsory insurance.
Who needs to register?
Owners of eligible electric scooters must register their vehicle through the DGT, including older models that qualify for the temporary registration scheme.
Scooters that fall outside the legal definition of a VMP may be subject to different rules.
How to register your e-scooter
Check your scooter
Check whether your scooter has a DGT circulation certificate and identification plate. If you are unsure whether your model is certified, consult the official DGT list.
Apply online
Use the official DGT registration service to register your scooter. You will generally need to identify yourself using an accepted electronic identification method, such as Cl@ve or a digital certificate.
If you are having trouble registering your electric scooter or logging into Cl@ve Spain Simplified can help with this.
Prepare your documents
Depending on the scooter, you may need:
Your NIE or other accepted identification.
Your address and contact details.
The scooter’s serial number and certification details, if applicable.
Photograph of the electric scooters details (small plate on your scooter with tech details and model).
Payment of the applicable registration fee.
Get your registration certificate and identification label
Once registration is complete, the DGT issues a digital certificate with the scooter’s registration number. You can then obtain the required identification label and display it on the scooter.
What about insurance?
Registration is linked to the requirement for compulsory insurance. Check the current DGT guidance and confirm the insurance requirements for your specific scooter before using it on public roads.
I went with AXA as it was very simple to do online and was reasonably cheap and a trusted name. It cost €69 and I opted to have personal insurance should I be injured in an accident which cost an additional €20.
