Changing Utility Bills in Spain

If you buy a property, move into a rental or take over a home, you may need to change the name on the electricity, gas and water contracts. In Spain, this is known as a cambio de titularidad.

Which bills can you change?

You can usually request a change of account holder for:

  • Electricity (luz)

  • Gas (gas)

  • Water (agua)

Contact each supplier separately, as water services are often managed by a local utility company.

What documents do you need?

Requirements vary by supplier, but you will generally need:

  • Your passport or DNI/NIE.

  • The property address and details of the existing contract.

  • The previous account holder’s details.

  • A recent utility bill or the supply point reference, such as the electricity CUPS number.

  • Your Spanish bank account details for direct debit.

  • Proof that you own or rent the property, if requested.

Can someone do it for you?

If you cannot manage the paperwork yourself, you may be able to authorise a representative using a Power of Attorney (poder notarial). Check with each supplier whether it accepts a representative and what authorisation or documents are required.

Is there a fee?

Changing the account holder on an existing electricity or gas contract is generally free. However, charges may apply if the supply has been disconnected or technical work is needed. Water charges and procedures depend on the local provider.

Spain Simplified can put together all your documents together and apply to make the necessary changes on your behalf.
