Registering with Social Services in Spain
If you live in Spain and need support with personal, family or financial difficulties, you can contact your local social services department (Servicios Sociales). They can assess your circumstances and explain what assistance may be available.
What help is available?
Depending on your circumstances and local eligibility rules, social services may provide guidance or support with:
Financial hardship and essential living costs.
Family support and childcare needs.
Help for older people or people with disabilities.
Housing difficulties and emergency assistance.
Referrals to community services and other support organisations.
How to register
Contact your local town hall
Ask for the social services department (Servicios Sociales) at your Ayuntamiento. Some municipalities require an appointment.
Prepare your documents
You may be asked for:
Your passport or other identification.
Your Padrón certificate or proof of address.
Proof of income and household circumstances.
Any documents relevant to the support you need.
Requirements vary depending on the service and your situation. Spain Simplified can arrange your paperwork and help you arrange your appointments.
Attend an assessment
A social worker may arrange an appointment to discuss your circumstances, assess your needs and explain which services or benefits you may qualify for.
Follow the application process
Some types of support require a separate application, additional evidence or approval from another authority.
Can foreign residents apply?
Foreign residents can contact local social services for information and an assessment. Eligibility for particular benefits or services depends on the programme, your circumstances and the applicable rules.
Registering with social services does not automatically qualify you for financial assistance. Contact your local Ayuntamiento for details of available services and application requirements. Spain Simplified can arrange your appointments for you should you need help or can translate documents for you.
