Driving Licence Exchanges in Spain
If you live in Spain and hold a driving licence issued by another country, you may need to exchange it for a Spanish licence. The rules depend on where your licence was issued, whether you are resident in Spain and the type of vehicle you drive.
Can you exchange your licence?
EU/EEA licences: These are generally recognised in Spain while valid, although exchange may be possible or required in certain circumstances, such as expiry or renewal.
UK licences: Exchange rules depend on your circumstances and licence validity. Eligible UK licence holders can generally exchange their licence without taking a Spanish driving test.
Other countries: Spain has exchange agreements with certain countries. If your country is not covered by an applicable agreement, you may need to obtain a Spanish licence through the normal testing process.
If you become resident in Spain, check how long you can continue driving on your existing licence. Some licences are subject to time limits or additional requirements.
How to exchange your licence
Check your eligibility
Visit the official Spanish traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), to confirm whether your licence qualifies for an exchange.
Book an appointment
You can usually arrange an appointment with the DGT or check whether your application can be completed online.
Prepare your documents
Depending on your circumstances, you will generally need:
Your valid passport or other accepted identification.
Proof of residence in Spain, where required.
Your original driving licence.
A completed application form.
A recent photograph, if required.
Payment of the applicable fee.
A medical fitness report from an authorised driver recognition centre, where required.
Additional documents may be needed depending on the country that issued your licence.
Submit your application
The DGT will check your documents and confirm whether your licence can be exchanged. You may need to surrender your original licence as part of the process.
