How To Exchange Your Green Residency Certificate For A TIE
British citizens living in Spain under the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement can exchange their old green residency certificate, whether paper or credit-card sized, for a biometric Foreigner Identity Card (TIE).
The exchange is generally voluntary, and your existing green certificate remains valid as proof of your residence rights. However, the TIE includes your photograph and biometric details, which can make it easier to confirm your status when travelling.
How to exchange your certificate
You will generally need:
-
A valid passport.
-
Your existing green residency certificate.
-
The completed application form required for your residence status, usually EX-23 for Withdrawal Agreement beneficiaries.
-
Proof of payment of the relevant fee using Modelo 790, Código 012.
-
A recent passport photograph.
-
Your empadronamiento certificate (Padron), if required by the relevant office.
Check the current requirements before attending, as the document list may vary.
Attend your fingerprint appointment
Attend in person with your documents. Your fingerprints will be taken as part of the application process, and you will receive confirmation of your application.
Collect your TIE card
When your card is ready, follow the National police station’s instructions to book or attend a collection appointment. Bring your passport and application receipt to collect your new card.
Spain Simplified can arrange your paperwork and appointments. If you are working this is very handy as all you will have to do is attend your appointments.
