Kids Bike Riding at Educación Vial Park in Punta Prima
Finding somewhere for children to learn to ride a bike safely isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Quiet roads can still have cars, pavements aren’t always suitable and busy parks aren’t necessarily ideal when a child is still finding their balance.
There is somewhere in Orihuela Costa that is a little different, though. The Educación Vial Park in Punta Prima has been designed around roads and traffic, giving children a controlled place where they can ride bikes and scooters while becoming familiar with some of the things they will eventually encounter on real streets.
A safe place for kids to practise riding bikes
When children are learning to ride, being able to practise without worrying about normal traffic can make things a lot easier.
The park has its own miniature road layout, so children can ride around rather than simply using a small patch of open space. There are roads, crossings, Round abouts and road signs, creating an environment that looks more like a little version of a real neighbourhood.
For a child who is still getting used to steering, stopping and controlling their bike, it gives them somewhere different to practise without cars or pedestrians.
It can also be useful for children who have already learnt the basics but aren’t quite ready to start cycling around normal roads.
Learning to ride a bike while learning about the road
What makes this park particularly interesting is that learning to cycle and learning about road safety come together.
Children using bikes or scooters can become familiar with things such as pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and road signs while they are riding. Instead of simply being told what a sign means, they can see how these things fit into the environment around them.
The park was specifically created as a road-safety education facility, with the layout designed to recreate a small urban environment.
Parque de Educación Vial La Ciñuelica
The Park was refurbished by Orihuela Town Hall and includes improvements to the road surfaces, signs, lighting, seating and other areas. If you look at how it looks on google maps you can see why the refurbished it.
It is also used as an educational resource, with road-safety activities involving local schools and the Policía Local. There is a similar Park like in Torrevieja but this has limited access as it is in the grounds of the local police station, so it’s not open every day as this one is.
There are no swings or slides and dogs are not allowed. However just down the road is another more traditional Park that you play area and dog areas.
