Station Park Torrevieja
If you have spent time in Torrevieja, you may have passed Parque de la Estación without giving it much of a thought.
It is not one of those places that immediately grabs your attention like the seafront, the marina or the beaches in the area. In fact, from the outside it can look like just another local park.
But there is more to Parque de la Estación than first meets the eye.
Situated in the El Acequión area of Torrevieja, the park sites on the site of the town’s former railway station. Today, it is a place where children play, people relax, young people use the skatepark and local events take place. Look a little closer, though, and you can still find reminders of the railway that once played an important role in the town.
Where is Parque de la Estación?
Parque de la Estación is on Avenida de la Estación in Torrevieja, in the El Acequión area.
For anyone visiting central Torrevieja, it is within walking distance of the town centre, although how long the walk takes will obviously depend on exactly where you start.
Why is it called Parque de la Estación?
Parque de la Estación means Station Park, and the park stands on the site of Torrevieja’s former railway station.
The railway was once an important part of life in Torrevieja, particularly because of the town’s salt industry. The railway provided a way of transporting goods and connecting Torrevieja with the wider area.
The railway eventually stopped operating in 1970, and the former station was later converted to a park. A section of the old railway track has also been retained as a reminder of what was here before.
A park for families
One of the main reasons local families use Parque de la Estación is its children’s area.
The Council included the park in its programme to improve Torrevieja’s children’s play areas. Improvements included an inclusive seesaw and a multi-game structure with a slide, climbing equipment and other play features.
I’m not going to lie its not the most impressive I have seen, but that’s not the main attrition of the park. However it is popular after school as there is a primary school just across the road.
The chickens and roosters
Yes, there are chickens and roosters around the park.
This is always one of my favorite things seeing whilst walking around Torrevieja, They are not confined to the park an you will often see them walking around the near by streets. Young children and tourist always find them as interesting as the park itself.
Parque de la Estación Skatepark
The skatepark is the main atration of the Parque de la Estación for older children and teenagers. The area is used for skateboards, scooters, roller skates and bikes, with ramps and rails to practise on.
If you are visiting Torrevieja with children who are into skateboarding or scooters, this is definitely an area of the park worth a visit.
The old railway connection
It is easy to visit playground and skatepark and leave without realising that you are standing on what was once a railway Station.
It is not a huge railway museum and you won’t find a collection of locomotives waiting for you, but the remaining railway features give you something to look
Local park events
The park is also used for local festivals, celebrations and community events.
In recent years it has hosted events connected with Torrevieja’s Feria de Mayo, with temporary tents with food and drinks, live performances and dancing taking place inside the park. I often miss these events but from time to time I am fortunately in the right place at the right time.
When the events are on near by roads are often closed, and can be very busy.
Is Parque de la Estación worth visiting?
I wouldn’t suggest travelling across the Costa Blanca specifically to spend an entire day at Parque de la Estación.
It is a local park rather than a major tourist attraction.
If you are already in Torrevieja, especially around El Acequión, it makes a useful stop when its hot as there is shade. Families have the children’s play area and skatepark, while anyone interested in the history of the city has the former railway connection to explore.
At the time of writing this the night market is still just across the road, but it will be moving back to the Paseo del mar.
The city is obviously known for its beaches, salt lakes, restaurants and busy tourist areas, but if you are going to the night market near by your could stop in. If there is a local event on go for for sure they are great.
